As a fashion stylist, I am often asked how does one wear interesting fashion when past the Topshop age?
And although I have often vacillated between the opinion that one should always dress one’s age, or that fashion is ageless….my conclusion is: yes, fashion is ageless, but looking stylish after 40 requires certain adjustments to what one wears.
At the 45+ age spectrum I find myself in, and with the hindsight wisdom that over 20 years working in fashion brings me. I have concluded that the solution to expressing a keen fashion sense, while remaining stylish, lies largely on how to expertly mix clashing textures.
By that I mean, pairing that embroidered boho top with a streamlined silk pencil skirt, rather than with destroyed cut out jeans. Wearing that leather jacket, over a pussy bow silk blouse. Pairing that lace skirt with a luxe cotton t-shirt. Pairing those leather coated skinnies with a cashmere sweater…you get the picture, right?
This way, you remain entitled to express your style creativity, while liberating yourself from the boring constrictions of “dressing your age”.
Better still, if done right, you shall never look like your daughter again, and THAT is true fashion savviness!!!
